Afro Charlie

Description of artwork:
Through artworks in various media—such as sculpture, painting, drawing, and installation—Jorge Pineda expresses his engagement with social and humanitarian issues. Many of his works have addressed the physical and psychological toll of child abuse. He often arranges life-sized sculptures of children in compositions that metaphorically depict their anxious inner lives.

In Afro Charlie the three-dimensional figure of a boy faces the wall. Dark wall scribblings around and above the figure’s head echo the “afro” of the title and seem to emanate confused energy. The boy’s sneakers, headphones, skateboard, and the sports team number on the back of his jersey act as attributes of anonymous adolescence rather than as clues to individual identity (Text taken from the catalogue for the exhibition Portadores de sentido).
