In what ethical terms should Indigenous and Black arts be narrated? What strategies can we develop to avoid predatory relations that replicate political and social vulnerability in the artistic field?

On Tuesday, March 22, at 5:00 PM EDT join us for the first of two conversations centered around the topics and provocations explored in the recently-published editorial project, Alternative Routes. In this first session project co-editor Bruno Pinheiro will moderate a conversation in Portuguese between curators Amanda Carneiro and Igor Simões about Afro Latin-American aesthetic traditions and institutional racism in Art institutions.

This program will be held in Portuguese and English with closed captioning in Portuguese. Simultaneous interpretation in Spanish and English will be provided.

The editorial project Alternative Routes was published on January 7, 2022 and features contributions from eight artists from across Latin America, together with an introductory essay from its editors Bruno Pinheiro, Ph.D. candidate in History at the State University of Campinas, and Horacio Ramos, Ph.D. candidate in Art History at The Graduate Center, CUNY.

About the participants:

Amanda Carneiro is assistant curator at Museu de Arte de São Paulo and co-editor of Afterall magazine. She holds a master degree in History by Universidade de São Paulo and extensive research and work experience at Museu Afro-Brasil (São Paulo) and Ethnologisches Museum (Berlin). Recently, she co-curated at MASP the monographic exhibitions of artists Sonia Gomes (2018), Beatriz Milhazes (2020), Conceição dos Bugres (2021), and Abdias Nascimento (2022).

Igor Simões is a professor of History, Criticism, and Theory of Art at Universidade Estadual do Rio Grande do Sul (UERGS) and an independent curator. He holds a Ph.D in Visual Arts from UFRGS and is a member of the collection and education committees at Museu de Arte do Rio Grande do Sul (MARGS). He was part of the curatorial team for the 12th Bienal do Mercosul (2020) and is currently co-curator of the project Dos Brasis - Arte e Pensamento Negro at SESC.

Bruno Pinheiro is a Ph.D. candidate at State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), where he studies the trajectories of Brazilian Black modernist painters and sculptors. His research advisor is Dr. Silvana Rubino and his dissertation work is funded by FAPESP. He completed his Master degree in Aesthetics and Art History at the Museum of Contemporary Art of São Paulo University (MAC-USP) and worked as Visiting Scholar at the Institute of Fine Arts (IFA-NYU) during the year of 2020, under the supervision of Dr. Edward J. Sullivan. He has research experience in modernisms in the African Diaspora, race relations and visual culture.
