The Power of an Idea: A Moment in Time with Alfredo Jaar and Luis Pérez-Oramas
offers a privileged window into the minds, shared explorations, and personal interactions of prolific Chilean conceptual artist Alfredo Jaar and his longtime friend, Venezuelan curator and poet Luis Pérez-Oramas. Weaving their vast references of visual culture and the contemporary world into a substantial and nuanced critique, the authors contribute to the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros’ ongoing project of publishing firsthand accounts of art and ideas from Latin America in this series of exchanges.

The Power of an Idea uncovers the themes and challenges of Jaar’s lifelong artistic practice and a complex body of work that goes straight to the source: "ultimately...condensing everything to that one question that affects us all." An art book with a storytelling narrative and the freshness of a long-form journalism piece, the contents of The Power of an Idea can be experienced as a continuing dialogue within the span of a decade, or randomly explored as four separate conversation essays over time.

The volume includes stunning photographs and unpublished images from Alfredo Jaar’s archives, in a layout design inspired by the visual proposal of his oeuvre.

Expanding accessibility and working in the digital sphere has always been a central goal of CPPC President Adriana Cisneros de Griffin. The Power of an Idea therefore experiments with various digital distribution platforms, including the academically popular and accessible free PDF download, an e-book magazine format, and a print-on-demand version, shared at cost, which helps circumvent international distribution challenges particularly present in Latin America. The goal is to prioritize multiple access points for the CPPC’s mission-based publications, past and present.

Spanish version is also available.
