About the Exhibition
Radical Geometry examines the major artistic innovations in the development of abstraction in South America in the post-war era. The exhibition presents around 90 artworks from Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, and Venezuela by artists Joaquín Torres-García, Gyula Kosice, Hélio Oiticica, Lygia Clark, Jesús Soto and Carlos Cruz-Diez, among others, who created new and challenging geometric abstractions that captured the optimism that swept across these countries from the 1930s to the 1970s.
Jointly curated by the respective curators of the Royal Academy of Arts and the CPPC, Adrian Locke and Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro, this exhibition traces the emergence of radical ideas about the nature and future of art by a generation of artists who challenged the post-war pessimism in European culture, and developing the premises of European abstraction in exciting new directions.
The Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros’ Modern collection has been presented in over 10 museums, including major presentations at the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid (2013), the Blanton Museum of Art (2007), Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City (2006), the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard, (2001), and the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires, MALBA (2003).
