Donation of Contemporary Artworks to the Museo Amparo

The Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros (CPPC) has donated two contemporary artworks by the Mexican artist Tania Pérez Córdova to the Museo Amparo in Puebla. This gift strengthens the museum’s mission to cultivate a deeper understanding and appreciation of Mexico's rich cultural and artistic history, spanning from pre-Hispanic periods to the present day.

The donation of Call Forwarding (from the series Things Lost in Pause) (2013) and Person leaning on his elbow, un extra (2012) followed the exhibition, Portadores de sentido: Contemporary Art from the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros (February 9–July 22, 2019), which was organized jointly by the Museo Amparo and the CPPC.

Pérez Córdova’s work investigates the physical properties of materials and how they can be altered or contextualized to gain new meanings. She often uses everyday objects in her sculptures, transforming them to explore broader concepts. For instance, Call Forwarding, included in Portadores de sentido, requires replacing the SIM card embedded in the sculpture with one requested from a person as a temporary loan, each time the work is installed or exhibited. During the exhibition, the lender of the SIM card is asked to deactivate their personal phone number and to set up a call forwarding service to ensure that their calls are redirected.

What stands out in Call Forwarding is its inherently finite functionality, intrinsically linked to the lifespan of the SIM card technology it employs. As inevitable technological progression renders the SIM card obsolete, the piece will transition from an active, participatory "pause device" to a static sculpture, serving as a poignant reminder of the ephemeral nature of our digital connections and the constant evolution of technology.

Tania Pérez Córdova (Mexico, 1979), Call Forwarding (from the series Things Lost in Pause), 2013. Porcelain and borrowed SIM card, 12 5/8 × 12 5/8 × 3/4” (32 × 32 × 2 cm). Museo Amparo. Donación de Patricia Phelps de Cisneros en honor a Tomas García Alonso
