Ricardo Basbaum (São Paulo, 1961) lives and works in Rio de Janeiro. He is an artist and a writer, and since 1981 he has participated regularly in exhibitions and projects. His practice derives from his research of art as a connecting device that links sensory experience, sociability and language: his work is communicative and fosters the dissemination of actions and forms. He has developed a specific vocabulary for each new project. With diagrams, drawings, text, audio and installations, he creates devices in which the individual experience of the agents and observers who participate play an important role. In 2014 he had the solo exhibitions nbp-etc: escolher linhas de repetição (Galería Laura Alvim, Río de Janeiro) and The production of the artist as a collective conversation (Audain Gallery, Vancouver). Other recent solo shows include Diagramas (Centro Gallego de Arte Contemporánea, Santiago de Compostela, 2013); re-projecting (London) (The Showroom, London, 2013); Would you like to participate in an artistic experience? (Logan Center for the Arts, Chicago, 2012); and conjs., re-bancos*: exercícios & conversas (Museo de Arte de la Pampulha, 2011). He participated in the 30th and 25th Bienal de São Paulo (2012, 2002), and dOCUMENTA 12 (2007), among other group exhibitions. In 2012 he developed projects for ReaKt – Olhares e Processos (Guimarães, Portugal); Counter-Production (Generali Foundation, Vienna); Garden of Learning (Busan Biennial); and aberto fechado: caixa e livro na arte brasileira (Pinacoteca do Estado de SP). He is the author of Manual do artista-etc (Azougue, 2013); Ouvido de corpo, ouvido de grupo (Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, 2010); and Além da pureza visual (Zouk, 2007), and is a professor at the Institute of Arts of the University of Rio de Janeiro.
