Discusiones 4

Del VER, del ESCUCHAR, del LEER y del PENSAR el arte
[Of SEEING, LISTENING, READING and THINKING art]

June 2016––

This fourth edition of Discusiones will focus on the formation of seeing and its parallels: the formation of listening, reading, perceiving, feeling, and thinking.

Under the academic coordination of María Elena Ramos, we will engage two modes of relating art and education: a) an education FOR Art (to better understand each artistic language through forming perception of the artworks themselves), and b) an education IN FAVOR of Art (To know something further of the world through certain artistic creations).

The seminar Discusiones IV focuses on each one of these languages: plastic, cinematographic, architectural, graphic, musical, and poetic. In broad terms, this will be a more perceptual course than a theoretical one, although theory will still be here: entangled with the image.

In the will to create forms of seeing, we will choose some works (and certain of their aspects) that, facing the visible, allow a better understanding of an idea in the work—be it in painting, education, film, design object or typographic form. Concerning the audible, we will work to perceive what the narrative or poetic voice is saying, we will listen deeply to fragments of classical music, baroque, dodecaphonic or postmodern. At the same time, there will be a space within these different art languages for situations in which new technologies—visual or sonorous—expand the field of the perceptual and cognitive.

Because the general focus is more perceptual than historical, we will analyze cases from national, Latin American and international art. A certain aperture in time will allow us to review works from different time shifts, movements or trends. Contemporary art but also other moments in history (Middle Ages, Renaissance, Modernity and Postmodernity). We will observe thus many ways of seeing and building/producing works of art.

Although we will pause to look at constitutive elements of the works, we recognize the impossibility (even the inconvenience) of fragmenting the analysis excessively. We aspire towards developing a gaze that is both analytical and synthetic, which, focusing on certain aspects, can show that the accomplishment of a work requires an integration of its elements, like components of language, but also in the wider sense contained in each work.

During the one-hour talk we hope to see how content is conveyed through visible means (be it a figure or an abstract form, a gesture, a movement, a light, a plane or a cinematographic angle) and audible means (a voice, a sound texture, a particular rhythm, a timbre). We want to approach the works of art from within, searching to penetrate part of the process of conformation and growth. We hope to accomplish in the before and after of each conference, the mobilization of significant perceptions in the participants, hoping that they will be stimulated to search further, to better know and sense the works of art, and ultimately to know the world through what these works reveal to us.
