María Elena Ramos

María Elena Ramos has a degree in Social Communication from Universidad Católica Andrés Bello, and a master's and PhD in philosophy from the Universidad Simon Bolívar. She was President of the Museum of Fine Arts in Caracas from 1989 to 2001, and a founding member of the National Art Gallery (1976) and the Museo de Arte Popular de Petare. She was also a member of the team that created the Instituto de Educación Superior Armando Reverón in the 1980s. Since 1976 she has been a lecturer at universities and museums in Venezuela, Latin America, United States, Spain, and France.

Among her publications are El Ávila en la mirada de todos, 2014; La cultura bajo acoso, 2012; Gego, 2012; Diálogos con el arte, 2007; Fotociudad. Estética urbana y lenguaje fotográfico, 2003; De las formas del arte, 2002; Armónico-Disonante, 2001;  Acciones frente a la plaza, 1995; Diálogo con lo natural, 1992; Pistas para quedar mirando, Academia Nacional de la Historia, 1991 and Arte y naturaleza, 1987.

Some of her curatorial projects are: Ética-Estética Política, 2013; Contaminados, 2012; Pasión y razón de un espíritu constructivo (Torres-García y la Escuela del Sur), Biarritz, 2006; Árboles, Bienal Internacional del Barro, Caracas, 2001; Christian Boltanski: Sombras, Caracas, l999; Intervenciones en el espacio (artists: Kosuth, Graham, Camnitzer, Caramelle y otros), 1995; Jesús Soto: La Física, lo Inmaterial, Museo de Arte Moderno Jesús Soto, 1993; Alejandro Otero: Las Estructuras de la Realidad, Bienal Internacional de Sao Paulo, 1991. She has been the curator for Venezuela in several international biennials: Venice, São Paulo, Medellín, and Cuenca.
