Juan Pablo Garza
Juan Pablo Garza (Maracaibo, 1980) completed studies at the Julio Vengoechea School with the photographers Alvaro Silva and Alejandro Vásquez (1998-1999) and at Miami Dade College with the artist Teresa Dihel (2002-2004). He was a professor at the Strobo School of Photography in Maracaibo, Venezuela (2009-2011) and co-founder/co-director of Espacio de Arte Contemporáneo Al Borde (2010-2014), which won the 2012 grant from the Fundación Cisneros/Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros’s program for supporting cultural organizations. His work has been shown in countries like Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Canada, United States, Spain and Holland. His exhibition Reforma del Ahora (Al Borde, Maracaibo, 2012) was reviewed in ArtForum by the curator Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy as one of the best shows of the year. Among the prizes and acknowledgements that he’s received are the First Prize in XII Salón SuperCable Jóvenes Con FIA (Centro Cultural Corp Banca, Caracas, 2010); First Prize in the 6to. Salón Regional de Jóvenes Artistas (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo del Zulia, Maracaibo, 2010). In 2012, he was selected to participated in the residence program at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture with a grant from the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros. In 2013, he was part of the residence program Plataforma Exterior, organized by the Oficinia#1 gallery in Bogota, Colombia.
